2008 wurde er für den Grammy nominiert und seine Konzerte sind seit
längerem ein Geheimtipp. Der Weg nach Europa ist in diesem
Zusammenhang eher als selten zu betrachten, daher ist die kommende Show in

“THE LOVE & WAR MASTERPEACE”

The Great Recession. The War on Terror. Global warming. The Earth-shattering quake in Haiti. Between man-made messes and natural disasters, it seems like we’re all catching hell these days. Rather than shy away from the financial, physical and emotional challenges so many of us face, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Raheem DeVaughn tackles them head on with The Love & War MasterPeace, his most ambitious album to date.

“The Love & War MasterPeace is one half social commentary, one half love,” explains the soul singer. “With everything going on, it just feels like the right time for it. As a country I think we’ve made some progress, but we remain divided —it’s still poverty versus wealth and good versus evil. We’re separated by skin color and religion, politics and control over natural resources. I think of this album as a natural extension of where I am personally and where we are as a nation.”

To connect the thematic dots, DeVaughn tapped Princeton professor and public intellectual Dr. Cornel West for a series of poetic, politically charged interludes.

The unlikely pair met at the 2007 BET Hip-Hop Honors ceremony and have kept in close touch ever since. “Dr. West has an infectious spirit. Even if you don’t know who he is, he commands you to listen,” says DeVaughn. “He’s in tune with his power and he uses it for good.”

Largely produced by Kenny Dope, The Love & War MasterPeace is combination of song that are half socially conscious and half love. For example, on the bluesy “Soldier’s Story,” DeVaughn sings a dialogue between a nervous young man headed to Iraq and his worried mother. “That song was inspired by a friend of mine in Maryland,” he notes. “I saw him in the barbershop right before he left for Iraq. The next time I ran into him, he was missing both of his legs.”

For the breathtaking peace anthem, “Nobody Wins a War,” DeVaughn recruited a soul sonic force of R&B greats including Jill Scott, Bilal, Anthony Hamilton, Ledisi, Chrisette Michele, Citizen Cope, Dwele and Chico DeBarge. “I’ve always wanted to do a record like ‘We Are the World.’ When [longtime producer] Kenny Dope played me the track, I was like ‘Yo, this is that record!,’” DeVaughn recalls. “I made a crazy wish list of people and personally reached out to everybody. Most of them said yes. The result is big.” Rounding out the politically minded thread of the album musically are wicked verses by Ludacris, who appears on the lead single “Bulletproof,” Bun B (“Wing & a Prayer”) and Damien “Jr. Gong” Marley (“Revelation 2010”).

Of course, the man behind the Grammy-nominated smash hits “Woman” and “Customer” gives equal play to matters of the heart. Standouts from The Love & War MasterPeace include “I Don’t Care,” the Ne-Yo-produced second single about maintaining a relationship in the face of haters; “The Greatness,” which features Wale and picks up where “Woman” left off; and “Calling Me,” a slinky Norman Connors-style romp that exploits the full power of DeVaughn’s falsetto. DeVaughn displays his playful side on “Lose Control,” a sprawling, 11-minute house party jam featuring underground firestarter Phil Ade, and “B.O.B.

The son of renowned jazz musician Abdul Wadud, DeVaughn grew up in Maryland and cut his teeth performing in clubs throughout the Washington, D.C. area. After several indie releases, which he sold on the streets and at his shows, the crooner signed with Jive Records and dropped The Love Experience, his slept-on 2005 debut. DeVaughn broke through commercially with 2007’s Love Behind the Melody, which earned him two Grammy nods, two BET J Awards for “Best Male R&B Artist” and “Album of the Year” as well as a prime slot on tour with Jill Scott.

Although he’s become one of modern soul’s most beloved artists, DeVaughn continues to grind. In addition to releasing 8 mixtapes over the past 7 years, he’s co-written songs with funk legend Bootsy Collins, and will be featured in his first acting role playing blues singer Andrew Tibbs, in Who Do You Love, a biopic about Chess Records set to release this spring. He also leads the DMV Movement, an artistic union of D.C.-Maryland and Virginia artists, including Wale and Phil Ade (who is the first signed artist from his newly formed 368 Music Group record label). DeVaughn has taken a philanthropical stance by partnering with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to produce a series of PSAs about HIV/AIDS prevention.

While narrow minds might find it difficult to reconcile all of DeVaughn’s passions, he remains firmly committed to being every bit of himself.

Und vor Julian Williams lag ein weiter Weg, allerdings mit einem klar anvisiertem Ziel: Musik für Geist und Seele! In diesem Sinne veröffentlicht der damals 22-jährige R&B-Geheimtipp unter dem Künstlernamen J-Luv 2002 sein erstes Soloalbum KONTRASTE (Echo-Nominierung, 3p). Nach der Veröffentlichung avanciert das Album innerhalb kürzester Zeit zum Inbegriff des deutschen R&B und Julian gelingt es damit sowohl die deutsche Musikgeschichte als auch die hiesige Musiklandschaft nachhaltig zu prägen. Bis heute konnte Deutschland in diesem Genre weder ein vergleichbares Album noch einen vergleichbaren Künstler hervorbringen. Julian Williams schafft es nämlich wie kein Zweiter, Emotionen so einzufangen, sie aufzuschreiben und in Klänge umzuwandeln, dass sie den Zuhörer fast magisch in ihren Bann ziehen und niemehr loslassen wollen. Hinzu kommt die einzigartig soulige Stimme des Sängers, die es ihm ermöglicht durch samtweiche Tiefe, seiner beispiellosen Lyrik Leben einzuhauchen. In einer Welt, in der Musik oftmals dazu genutzt wird um Gewalt zu propagieren oder Angst und Hass zu schüren, besingt Julian Williams aus tiefster Überzeugung und mit höchstem Respekt die Liebe. Musik, du bist mein Leben.” (Der erste Ton, Kontraste, 2002) Seit 2002 ist viel Zeit vergangen und im Verlauf der letzten Jahre hat sich Julian Williams nicht nur musikalisch verändert sondern auch menschlich weiterentwickelt. Der 31-jährige Ausnahmekünstler lebt heute in New York City und arbeitet dort als Friseur/Stylist und kann so seiner Kreativität erneuten Ausdruck verleihen. Sein Fokus liegt dennoch auf seiner Musik und deshalb arbeitet er weiterhin unermüdlich an neuen Songs und Projekten. Eine schier unbändige Energie und musikalische Affinität sind zweifellos Julians ständige Begleiter. 2009 arbeitet er mit Cassandra Steen und selbst Echogewinner Peter Fox kann und will nicht auf Julians musikalische Energie verzichten und geht mit ihm sowohl ins Studio als auch auf Tour. What do you do when you are chosen to carry on the legacy of the greatest Hip Hop show of all time? Well, if your name is Sucio Smash you make sure your show continues to be the best ever. After being personally chosen by Bobbito Garcia to hold down the Stretch & Bobbito show, Sucio Smash alongside his partner Timm See has been representing on the New York City airwaves via WKCR 89.9FM and the world via Squeezeradio.podomatic.com with the Squeeze Radio show.

Named one of America’s top Djs by Complex Magazine, Best Hip Hop Show by Time Out New York and Best Radio Show by Tablist Magazine, Sucio Smash has rocked parties with the world’s greatest DJs and producers. Including DJ Premier, Marley Marl, Evil Dee and Prince Paul to name a few.

Sucio Smash is an international DJ who plays at New York’s best night clubs and held residencies at spots including the world’s famous Knitting Factory, APT and the now defunct Table 50 were he ran a monthly party alongside Pete Rock. He has also performed at the legendary Rock Steady Crew Anniversary and The Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival 3 years straight.

In 2008 Sucio celebrated 5 years on the airwaves with one of the most classic shows in radio history, 25 MCS and 5 Producers live on the air! That year also marked the 1st Anniversary of “The Lunchroom”, an event established by Smash and the only place in New York that showcases the best Hip Hop talent on a monthly basis. The Lunchroom so far has featured Large Professor, A.G. (D.I.T.C.), Blu, El Da Sensei, J-Live, Juggaknots, Torae, Skyzoo, John Robinson aka Lil’ Sci, Chip Fu and Shabaam Sahdeeq to name a few.

2008 also marked a new beginning for Mr. Smash when he launched High Water Music. So far the label has released a 12” by Sputnik Brown “R U Havin’ Fun Yet?” and a digital single by P.CASSO “Mr. Hollywood”. Both releases have been critically acclaimed and featured in numerous publications including XXL. High Water Music also presented special showcases during the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival weekend and CMJ week in New York city. Next releases on the label for 2008 are P.CASSO’s album “For Your Consideration”, Señor Kaos “Girls Rock Too” (digital single), Ben Grymm & Shawn Jackson “Back in My World” (7” and Digital) and Daniel Joseph “Demo Season” (mix CD).

Roberto Ommel aka Deejay Cream, born in 1979, started his musical journey with Jazz, Funk, Soul, R&B and Hip Hop.

At the age of 18, friends introduced him to the love of his life: Deejaying!
From the moment he heard 2 tracks mixed into 1 he knew what his purpose in life would be; spreading his sounds throughout the whole world!!

With lifetime of experience, Cream started a crew called SFFRMKRS (vibemakers).
With this crew Cream organises 2 big parties in Amsterdam and hosted an area at one of the biggest festivals in Holland, called Mysteryland.

He created his own sound that combines HIPHOP, UKsounds, DnB, 80’s and 90’s classics but with the main ingredient Party Music!

Shenkie’s passion for music started at the age of 6. He started playing the guitar and was part of a band. In 1995 he started buying vinyl-records and in 1996 he traded his guitar for turntables; he bought a set of Technics SL1200 MKIIs. It was not long before he made his debut in 1998 in ‘Cafe de Duivel’ in Amsterdam, since then he has rocked lots of parties!
Among other things Shenkie is famous for his vinyl collection of 90’s hiphop. In DJ-Sets nowadays he prefers to spin soulful broken beat, hiphop en R&B.

Dibb loves music. Studied, produced and played it. Analyses, collects and shares it. The affair started early 1980s and has been growing stronger ever since. Over 20 years he has been collecting original CDs across genres; constantly redefining and reconfirming his love for all sorts of rhythm and melody. Shenkie invited him to DJ at a number of parties at Odeon in Amsterdam in 2008 and found out Dibb & Shenkie really complemented each other.
Dibb loves spinning a fresh mix of classics and new tracks, broken beat/nu jazz, minimal/tech house, hiphop/soul.
