LADI6
Ladi
New Zealand’s premier hip hop/soul diva
A year on from the release of her long-awaited and deeply personal 2008 debut album Time Is Not Much, and Ladi6 (Karoline Tamati) is on top of her game.
Aided and abetted by her musical partner Parks, the 27-year-old has established herself as one of the country’s pre-eminent musicians. Her ability to blend jazz, reggae and soul vocal styles with razor-sharp socially conscious lyrics has cultivated her an enviable reputation as New Zealand’s leading live performers. She has rocked stages at New Zealand music festivals such as Rippon, Vodafone Homegrown, Big Day Out, Parihaka Splore, Music Mountain Matakana, Rhythm and Vines and Womad.
The words “in demand” no longer do her justice. The top-ranking soul sister has taken her Pacific style to foreign shores, performing in Australia, Europe and the United Kingdom. In recent years her sultry voice has graced tunes by Kiwi acts Shapeshifter, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Pacific Heights, 4 Corners, Scribe, Opensouls, Solaa, 50HZ and German musician Sepalot. Top that off with support slots for international performers Talib Kweli, Ohmega Watts, Freddie Kruger The Roots, De La Soul, 50 Cent and Alicia Keys and it’s abundantly clear the Christchurch-based artist’s star continues to rise.
Over the last 12 months, the praise of the fans and the critics has been lavished on Ladi6 and Parks, who she acknowledges as crucial to the formation of her exceptional sound and who took a leading role in production and writing of Time Is Not Much. The album took three years to record, involved some of Aotearoa’s premier players, among them Riki Gooch (Trinity Roots), Julien Dyne and Chip Matthews (Opensouls) and Joe Lindsay (Fat Freddy’s Drop), and had the final touches applied by Fat Freddy’s Drop’s main man Mu and Parks at The Drop’s Lyall Bay HQ. With such quality and pedigree, it was no surprise Time Is Not Much made the 2008 top album lists of, among others, Waikato Times, The New Zealand Herald and The Press, all of which featured extensive interviews with Ladi and Parks. It spawned two videos – the reggae-fused opening single Walk Right Up (directed by Oscar Keightly, her cousin), and the super-smooth Dark Brown.
But the culmination of this music public adoration came at the tail-end of 2009, when the industry accolades started rolling in as well. At the 2009 Pacific Music Awards, Ladi6 gained a nomination for APRA’s Best Pacific Song Award, Niu FM Best Pacific Urban Artist and Pacific Blue Best Pacific Female Artist – which she won. The icing on the cake – Ladi6 claimed the Best Urban/Hip Hop Album title at October’s New Zealand Music Awards, the one award she and Parks “wanted the most”.
Ladi6 is not slowing down, and not resting on her laurels. Work has begun on the eagerly awaited second album, with Parks again handling production. She has numerous gigs and festival appearance scheduled for summer 2009-2010, and will set about building on her standing as an energetic and engaging live performer few can match.
More than a decade after quiet beginnings with Christchurch all-girl crew Sheelahroc and Verse Two (her first musical project with Parks), Ladi6 is now a leading light in Aotearoa-New Zealand’s music scene.
Ladi6 has fans all over the world and across the generations – from primary-school age kids to grandparents – and even though she is a veteran of the scene, she’s only just getting started.

JULIEN DYNE
Julien
Hustle) and Parks (Ladi6) gewonnen werden.
The Mizell Brothers (Motown/Jackson Five, Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey), Om’mas Keith (Sa-Ra Creative Partners), Steve Spacek, Mark Pritchard (Harmonic 313), Andreya Triana, Black Spade, Theo Parrish, Roman Rosic, Skymark und Sophie Loizou machte.
“Very fuckin’ good shit mate!…”
Gilles Peterson
“Some of the dopest heaviest ish I have heard in a long time”
DJ Vadim
“Take a little Dilla vibe , mix in some jazz herbs and spices , bake it in the south pacific sun and BAMM, you’ve got Julien Dyne”
Mark de Clive Lowe
“Sophisticated future funk suited for anybody with ears and a sense of rhythm. Dopeness!”
Recloose
“I’m always checking for Julien Dyne’s music. He is a true musician who can play organic and authentic funk, jazz and soul. He is also a true producer who can rock an MPC and an array of analog synths with the best of them. On Pins & Digits he finds the perfect balance between these two facets, taking all of it forward.”

He’s also acted as tour dj for acts like Cypress Hill, Gurus’s Jazzmatazz, Rock Steady and the Beatnuts. LA COKA NOSTRALCN
La Coka Nostra is a breath of fresh air in these days of contrived airbrushed rap music. LCN isn’t trying to gloss shit up in the least they like it ugly and gritty the way rap music should always be.
Somewhere along the lines people forgot about groups like the mighty Wu-Tang clan or Cypress Hill and the dirty raw esthetic these groups had but LA Coka sure didn’t. They embrace the darkness and the dirt and ain’t afraid to be ugly with it.
LCN’s music is a much needed return to the days of sex, drugs & rap n roll a sentiment that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the groups growing legion of fans. La Coka rocks for the kids that dig hardcore punk rock and rap and don’t give a fuck who knows about it.
Composed of members Ill Bill, Slaine, Everlast, DannyBoy and DJ Lethal. La Coka ain’t rapping for the Hollywood set even if you see them on the mean streets in the city of angels. The collective’s individual accomplishments are enough to write a book on but that’s not important right now, the past is the past and LCN is all about the future.
The coast-to-coast collective is bringing that punch you in the jaw kind of rap music the worlds been missing for too damn long right about now. La Coka Nostra speaks for the unspoken, the unseen and unrepresented legion of kids that need something to inspire and make them perspire. LCN is a hard, right to the mouth, lyrical foot up the ass to the flossy set and a musical pistol whipping the rap game hasn’t unearthed in way too long a time. In this day and age of songs about 24’s and candy coated paint jobs, LCN is that stench of the mosh pit rap music needs so badly right now in order to preserve its vitality.
